Concert salutes emergency workers

The Nevada County Concert Band will honor area emergency response professionals in a free public concert Sunday at Western Gateway Park in Penn Valley.
Beginning at 5 p.m., the band's new principal conductor, Patti Carter, and assistant conductor, Cheryl Baker, will lead it in a presentation of patriotic music. KNCO's Jim Kerr will emcee.
The band's repertoire will include "The Good Ol' U.S.A.," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "Liberty Bell March," "God Bless America" and "America the Beautiful." Red, white, and blue balloons will be handed out to children.
During intermission, eight Emil and Hulda Stern Youth Scholarships will be awarded. Each student will receive $400 to go toward their music education.
Youth Scholarship recipients are Alexandra Bauer, who plays oboe at Seven Hills Middle School; Josh R. Colwell, who plays percussion in Magnolia Intermediate School's advanced band; Wesley Leonard, who plays clarinet in the Lyman Gilmore band; Laurel Sophia Marks, who plays cello with the Yuba River Charter School orchestra; Jacob Michael, who studies voice and piano and is in the Nevada City Home Study Charter School; Greg Rhodes, who plays baritone saxophone in Magnolia's Rattler Jazz band; Gretchen Stevens from Mount St. Mary's, who sings at public events and in the St. Patrick's Church choir; and David Trethewey, who plays clarinet with Magnolia's advanced band and jazz band.
