It'll be a quick jazz lesson during the Nevada County Concert Band's last Pioneer Park Picnic Pops summer concert this Sunday. With a theme of "Swing, Swing, Swing," the band will celebrate the evolution of jazz at 5 p.m.
Karen Schwartzkopf, the First Baptist Church pianist, will play Richard Rodgers' "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" with band accompaniment.
Different jazz eras will be featured during the free concert. Trumpeter Joe Siemers, clarinetist George Dunstan, trombonist Gordon Landon and saxophonist Ellen Bell will play Dixieland favorites such as "Jazz Me Blues" and the "Original Dixieland One Step."
"Salute to American Jazz" highlights include "A Night in Tunisia, Birdland" and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)."
The band's saxophone section will be featured on David Bennett's "Sax Soliloquy." The section includes altos Mary Whitmore, Phil Preston and Casey Dax; tenors Ellen Bell and Rachel Ramey; and baritones Don Brandt and Jeff Rector.
In keeping with the theme, a lucky audience member will win a wooden porch swing donated by B&C True Value Home Center.
Pioneer Park is in Nevada City. Bring lawn chairs and blankets for your seating comfort.
