On Sept. 7 and 8, Nevada City is the venue for the 36th Annual Constitution Day Parade and Celebration. Events are planned that include the Rotary Duck Race on Saturday morning at Deer Creek Plaza, the American Civil War Association presentations at 1 and 4 p.m. in Pioneer Park and a city-sponsored free outdoor concert featuring the Moonlight Swing Living History Big Band from 7 to 10 p.m. on Commercial Street (dancing is encouraged).
Sunday?s activities begin at 11 a.m. at Pioneer Park with Civil War re-enactments. At 12:30 p.m. there will be a concert by the Nevada County Concert Band on Broad Street, followed by the re-enactment of the signing of the Constitution. At precisely 2 p.m., the 36th Annual Constitution Day Parade will flow down Broad Street. Parking and shuttle services have been arranged at the Rood Center on Highway 49 to go to downtown Nevada City, and to and from the Roamin? Angels Car Show at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.
There will also be a Food and Arts Faire sponsored by the Commercial Street businesses to feed and entertain both before (11:00 a.m.) and after (3:30 p.m.) the parade. On both Saturday and Sunday there will be a pancake breakfast at Pioneer Park beginning at 7 a.m. Come spend the day in Nevada City and visit the car show at the fairgrounds, as well.
The 2002 celebration is dedicated to our nation?s heroes so a special invitation goes out to all of this county?s military veterans, and law enforcement, fire agency and emergency service workers and their families. All of Nevada County?s 12,000 school-age children and their parents are also invited. The 2001 Constitution Day Parade was three days before the horrible events of Sept. 11. We offer the opportunity to celebrate the document and ideals that have guided our country through all of its terrible moments and shining accomplishments, as well as to contemplate the year since Sept. 11.
If you are inclined to financially contribute to the expenses of the parade weekend, contributions can be made to Nevada City Constitution Parade at 317 Broad St., Nevada City, CA 95959.
