Need another reason to celebrate spring?

Then check out Nevada County Concert Band's first concert of the season Sunday in Grass Valley. The nonprofit concert band has presented free concerts here for more than three decades including standing gigs at the Fourth of July parade, Constitution Day Parade and the Nevada County Fair.

Sunday's spring concert repertoire includes the classical "Thunder and Lightning" by Johan Strauss, "Hungarian Dance, No. 5" by Brahms and "Light Cavalry Overture" by F. von Suppe. For lighter pops fare, conductor Cheryl Sutton Baker chose "The Blue Tail Fly" and the 'Superman" and "New York, New York" themes.

A special ensemble made up of saxophones, trumpets, trombones and baritones will present the Oscar-winning "Over the Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz."

Holding true to tradition, the 3 p.m. concert at the First Baptist Church (1866 Ridge Road) is free. Check out www.nccb.org on the Web or call 477-4787 for more details.
