Music is in the air as the Nevada County Concert Band performs Sunday in Pioneer Park. The theme of this year's concert is "Love in the Air." The music will be reflecting the high and low points of love. Selections from "Love Story," "Romeo and Juliet," "Fiddler on the Roof," "Dirty Dancing" and much more will be played. A small combo group of band members will also present "Music to Watch Girls By."
Jim Kerr, the morning DJ on KNCO, will be the announcer for the concert. Cheryl Baker will be conducting the band.
The NCCB is a nonprofit organization that was designated the "Official Band of Nevada County" by the board of supervisors, after playing for the board in the mid-1970s. The band has been in existence since the 1970s, and throughout the years has remained an all-volunteer band, giving free performances at the Summer Pops Concerts, as well as the Nevada County Fair. NCCB also marches in the 4th of July and Constitution Day parades every year.
The Nevada County Concert Band is made up of 40 to 50 local musicians. Members of the band are not required to audition, and rehearsals are open to all new members. During the summer, high school students are recruited for the band's busiest time, which also keeps them up to speed for their return to school in the fall. During NCCB's July concert, members of other community bands are invited to play with the Concert Band for a day of rehearsals, a picnic, then a concert in the afternoon.
