Lots of holiday entertainment to choose from

For those who plan ahead, this is a partial listing of holiday happenings.

Tonight is The Tree of Love by Friends of Hospice. A memorial service will be held at the Sierra Presbyterian Church, 175 Ridge Road, Nevada City, at 6 p.m., followed by a lighting of the Tree of Love and a reception.

• Paul Perry plays Advent Organ Series at Peace Lutheran Church in Grass Valley (828 W. Main St.) Wednesdays through Dec. 21 from 4:45 to 5:15 p.m. Free.

• The Sierra Gold Chorus, a local chapter of the Sweet Adelines International, is singing Saturday at St. Joseph's Cultural Center in Grass Valley. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12 and can be purchased by calling Joan Frink at 367-3532. At the door tickets are $15 and $8.

• A performance of "Messiah" takes place Sunday at the Sierra Presbyterian Church, 175 Ridge Road, Nevada City, at 3 and 6 p.m. Advance tickets are $10 adult and $6 youth, obtainable at the church, Record Connection Plus, Mountain Mail Plus (Raley's Center), and Wayside Christian Bookstore (Pine Creek Center); or for $12 and $8 at the door. Call 265-3291 for information.

• Also Sunday at 2:30 p.m. is a free Nevada County Concert Band holiday concert at the First Baptist Church, Ridge Road (opposite Nevada Union High School), Grass Valley.

• Dec. 9-11, Music in the Mountains presents its holiday concert at the Amaral Family Festival Center, at the fairgrounds in Grass Valley. Tickets are $5 (youth) to $27. Call the box office at 265-6124.

• The Nevada Union High School Choir will present its "Winter Concert" at the Don Baggett Theatre Dec. 13 and 15 at 7 p.m., $5 and $6 at the door. Members of the Chamber Choir will also sing at Nevada City's Victorian Christmas, around 8 p.m. Wednesday nights (Dec. 7, 14, 21) in the vicinity of JJ Jackson's, and 5 p.m. on Dec. 18.

• "A Christmas Concert" with the Grass Valley Male Voice Choir and Wesley Bell Ringers takes place Dec. 18, with one concert at 3 p.m and the other at 7 p.m. at the Sierra Presbyterian Church, 175 Ridge Road, Nevada City. Then on Dec. 21 the choir is singing during Nevada City's 6-9 p.m. Victorian Christmas at the Methodist Church atop Broad St. The choir doesn't charge for its appearances, but donations are accepted. Call choir member Allan Rogers at 265-4248 for more information.

Saturday is the third annual Christmas Celebration at the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad and Transportation Museum, 5 Kidder Court, Nevada City. Photo op with Santa Claus included. All free. 10 a.m.-4 .m. Call 470-0902.

The 28th year of Nevada City's Victorian Christmas begins Wednesday and runs for two more Wednesday nights (Dec. 14 and 21) and one Sunday afternoon (Dec. 18, 1:30-6 p.m.) in downtown Nevada City. The evenings run from 6-9 p.m. Shops are open, and there are street vendors, music and food. A $2 shuttle service is offered from the Nevada County Government Center at Hwy. 49 and Maidu Drive. Grass Valley's grand tradition of Cornish Christmas started the day after Thanksgiving and will continue for four subsequent Fridays, through Dec. 23, 6-9 p.m., downtown. A couple of happenings during Cornish Christmas are:

Friday at Studio 131, a reading by poet William O'Daly, starting at 7:30 p.m.


Dec. 9 at The Center for the Arts, a "Cornish Holiday Celebration of the Arts starting at 6 p.m.

Dec. 8-11, Neighborhood Center of the Arts is having its "Holiday Show and Sale," which opens Dec. 8 with a reception from 5-8 p.m., then continues Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; and concludes Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Neighborhood Center of the Arts is a nonprofit organization serving the developmentally disabled. Its regular gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. This Friday, however, the gallery will close at 6 p.m.

Dec. 8 and 15 are the annual Christmas Candlelight Tours of historic inns in Grass Valley and Nevada City, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. both days. Many innkeepers dress in period costume, and refreshments are served.
