The nation's classical music community has declared 2006 "The year of Mozart." To celebrate this great master's music, the 45-piece Nevada County Concert Band will perform the "Rondo for Solo and Wind Band," as arranged by Andy Clark. The solo will be played on euphonium by Ladson Geddings. The original piece, written in 1774, is the third movement, "Rondo Di Menuetto," of Mozart's "Bassoon Concerto in Bb major K191."

Geddings is a retired information technology manager who is a self-taught euphoniumist. He started playing in high school, continued with various Navy bands and now plays with the Yuba College Symphonic Band in addition to the Nevada County Concert Band.

The band's Spring Concert on Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Grass Valley marks the start of a busy season that includes the popular summer Pioneer Park Picnic Pops concerts in Nevada City. Says conductor Cheryl Baker, "Our Spring Concert features selections from the summer's repertoire so the audience gets a preview of things to come!" Such things include "Highlights from South Pacific," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday." For the march lovers, the band presents J.P. Sousa's "El Capitan March" and "La Siesta (Paso Doble March.)"
