Picnic Pops Concert: The Nevada County Concert Band is having its first summer "Picnic Pops Concert in Pioneer Park" at 5 p.m. Sunday. Fifty local musicians will play about two hours of music taken from the theme of "Look to the Rainbow." They'll play a program that includes every color from "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" to Glenn Miller's "Serenade in Blue." There will be a trombone soloist for "Over the Rainbow," and a sax section feature in Billy Joel's "Root Beer Rag." Several marches and patriotic pieces (highlighting red, white and blue) will be included.

The concert is free (though donations are accepted), and people are invited to bring their lawn chairs, blankets and picnic dinners for a wonderful summer experience. This is always a fun time!

Other Pioneer Park concerts will be July 22 ("A River Runs Through It") and Aug. 26 ("Where the Wild Things Are"). See more on the Web at www.nccb.org.

Alzheimer's and Joseph Voight: This came from Nancy Nelson of Penn Valley. "I read with great interest the article about Joseph Voight and his compassionate book about living with Alzheimer's disease. I had the privilege of most unexpectedly meeting this amazing young man. He had set up a booth at the local grocery store and was exchanging root beer floats for donations.

"The money was to go toward the dream of publishing his book. My husband and I were pleased to make a donation. As we were leaving, an unkempt, possibly homeless person walked up. We watched with some concern since all donations were out in the open, in a paper cup on the table.

"There appeared to be a sizable amount of money. We heard Joseph say 'excuse me' and thought oh no, this is not a good candidate to ask. Instead of asking for a donation Joseph handed out some money to the man asking if he would like a dollar. We were overcome with his generous spirit to be so sensitive to others' needs.

"I was again amazed when the man indicated 'No, thanks, you have a good cause.' I feel so proud and privileged to live in such a wonderful community. I would love to see this community pull together to make his dream come true."

Artist Marie Miller's work at NC Winery: Ellen Advise said Marie has been the Artist of the Month for June at Nevada City Winery, and time is running out to see her work. Her show is called "New Work." The July artist will be LeAnn Brook.

July Fourth flags: Joe Arenas told me the Nevada City Lions will be installing American flags on lawns throughout Nevada City as a community service project on the morning of July Fourth. So if you wake up that day and see a flag on your lawn, thank the Lions!
