Residents mixed on marriage ruling

Print Comment
Residents of western Nevada County had mixed views on Thursday's California Supreme Court decision overturning a state ban on same-sex marriage.

For Rough and Ready resident Travis Seolas, scriptural admonitions against homosexuality formed the basis of his opinion, he said.

"I definitely think it is morally wrong," said Seolas, 18. "I think it's pretty obvious that it's a view most Christians have."

Others saw the matter from a civic view.

"I'm neutral," said Peardale resident Carrie Hufford, 43. "We are all working citizens. We all work hard for our money. They should be supported like anyone else.

"If they truly love one another, that would be fine," Hufford added.

Same-sex couples should have the same freedoms heterosexuals have, said Penn Valley resident Austin Walsner, 21.

"If they want to get married, they should be able to do so," Walsner said. "We say we have freedom in other things, like freedom of speech. But when it come to being gay, it's a whole different story. I think it should be equal choice for everyone."
